In asserting the suff... more »iciency of the Bible, it is not meant that it contains all truth. It does not contain all truth in history : it is indeed invaluable as a historical record ; and it would be a great catastrophe if such an ancient and credible record were to be lost, but yet it is not pretended that all historic truth is to be met with in the Bible ; for there have been preserved and handed down to us the works of Josephus, the Jewish historian, which, on many points illustrate and confirm the sacred narrative ; and we have also histories of ancient Borne and Greece. And again, it does not contain all truth in science : for it was not given to teach it ; and when we look around on the face of nature ; when we look on the heavens above us and the earth beneath us, we behold innumerable truths which are not written in Scripture. And it is natural for us to suppose that great improvements have been made in science since the time the Bible was written ; and it must be borne in mind that it is a popular book, hence it employs the language of the people, and not scientific and philosophic terms. But it is consolatory for us tothat there is nothing in it when fairly examined, that is contradictory to the discoveries of science. Look for instance at the discoveries of modern astronomy as to the extent and magnitude of Creation :' the power of the telescope has brought to light innumerable worlds, scattered throughout space, which are peopled with intelligent beings ; thus demonstrating that our earth is far from being the only place which manifests the wisdom, power, and goodness of the Creator : that it is in truth but a speck,— an atom in the Cre...« less
