A very interesting variant of the numerous Sherlock Holmes adventures written by authors other than Doyle. I have a number of these stories and novels based on "newly discovered" manuscripts left by Dr. Watson, and I have enjoyed almost all of them.

The beginning of this book, perhaps the first third, moves slowly and, it seemed to me, to no purpose. That may have been due to it being the author's first novel or just the author setting the stage. In any case, after awhile the story takes off and is hard to put down, especially, when you realize that the author is heading to one of possible two explanations to the origins of the great detective.

If you enjoy Hall, then move on to his Dr. Ben Franklin detective series, which I enjoyed immensely.
