Only 11 when her family was forced into the Krakow ghetto by the Nazis, the author spent her early teen years in five concentration camps: Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, Mauthausen, Plaszow and Venusberg. She was liberated with her sister Blanca in 1945, the sole surviving members of her family. Forbidden to own paper or writing tools in the camps, Sonia continued to "write" her memories and poems in her head until she could commit them to paper after the war. Eventually she immigrated to the U.S., and in her later years helped found Holocaust institutions to preserve the legacy of that time and help educate others. A moving story of a young girl in a terrible time.
