Excerpt: Near the entrance was a pretty plaza bordered with large green trees and tall flowering shrubs, delightful to the eyes of the New Englanders, who had seen nothing but bare branches and slippery sidewalks for the last four months. Here stands a small chapel and a monument to Christopher Columbus, both whitewashed, surrounded by an iron railing. Mr. Johnstone, with an impetuous devotion to the great discoverer, praiseworthy in an Englishman, was anxious to enter the chapel ; but Miss Augusta's feeble Spanish wrested from a passing Cuban the information that the place is open for admission only one day in the year, the birthday of Christofero. The chapel is said to contain pictures representing events of the early Spanish discoveries. His tomb is in the Cathedral, on the right side of the high altar. Columbus was first buried in Spain, at Valladolid ; later his remains were removed to Seville, and in 1536 they were taken to St. Domingo. When in 1795 this place was given up to the French, the Spaniards resolved to retain the relics of their Great Discoverer, and the coffin was transported to Havana. Tomb Ok Columbus At Havana.
