Star Wars: The Old Republic: Fatal Alliance was released to be the herald for the Old Republic video game. Problem was, the game got slowed down and the book came out extremely early. So, to a large degree, it has kind of slipped through the cracks...
Which is a huge shame! This book is one of the better sci-fi novels I have read...period. It ranks up there with the best Star Wars novels and is better than MOST of the Star Trek books.
The story is about a ship that is attacked by privateers on the edge of the known galaxy. Rather than surrender, the ship self-destructs...but the cargo is still found. Now, the Hutts are auctioning off the prize to the Empire, the Republic, or anyone else that is willing to pay. The Empire sends a Sith emissary...the daughter of the woman who owned the ship. And the Republic sends a young Jedi padawan. Along with their allies...and a Mandalorian agent, the delegates arrive and all sides decide it would be more efficient to just take the cargo. That is when the fun really begins...when everyone finds an enemy that is more dangerous than the Sith and the Jedi combined!
This is a well-written story that takes place in the beginning of the revitalized war between the Sith and the Jedi. The characters are well-fleshed out...The focus changes regularly...no one is left out or forgotten. And the story itself is truly epic. This could be a better movie than most of the Star Wars flicks themselves. If you want to read a truly epic space opera, don't hesitate...Get this one. You don't have to be a Star Wars fan of long-standing to enjoy it...This takes place in ancient times...One of the earliest stories, so you won't have to read fifty books just to figure out what's going on. This is more than a video game lead in...It's an adventure! I can't recommend it highly enough.
