Excerpt: VI. -- In the fear of God there is true repentance on account of everything by which He is displeased. Sin in all its forms is displeasing to God, and this is the only thing about His creatures with which He is displeased. All His creatures, animate and inanimate, rational and irrational, celestial and terrestrial, are just what He willed them to be, except in so far as any of them may be tainted with sin. He was pleased with man, as he came from His own creating hand, fearfully and wonderfully made, and in so far as man remains what he originally was, God is still pleased with him. He is pleased with our bodies. He is pleased with our souls. He is pleased with the proper and legitimate use of all the mental faculties, and all the physical powers with which we have been endowed. Our fellow- men may be displeased with many things about us that are not sinful. Our personal appearance may be offensive to some, and our mental peculiarities may be displeasing to others. We may not come up to certain ideas of refinement which some, according to an arbitrary standard of their own, may believe to be indispensable. In the eyes of those who prefer the glitter to the gold, and the shadow to the substance, the absence of certain superficial accomplishments may be equivalent to absolute barbarism; but He with whom we have to do, judges by a very different standard.
