Normally, I dislike books which include "The Untold Story" in their title. But I'll make an exception here.

The author, Flint Whitlock, also wrote books on the American submarine service during World War II, and on the American paratrooper experience on D-Day. Both were excellent, as is this one. He may have written others, and, if so, I'm going to read them.

If you're seen the movies "D-Day" and "Saving Private Ryan," and enjoyed them, then you should read this book, as it will support what you saw on the screen, but also correct some deliberate and not-so-deliberate Hollywood errors.

The true value of this book is a detailed description of this famous American infantry division and how it became so. Plus, the book gives far more attention to the actual landing and the responses of the men in this division to what they encountered on D-Day than any other book I've read. The author continues to follow the actions of the division and its men throughout the rest of the campaign in Europe, but not in as much detail as he does for the invasion.
