I venture to state---not being an expert---this is an excellent history of the beginning of the Revolutionary War in and around Boston. Yet it begins with the Battle of Brooklyn on Long Island. The author does a fairly good job of demonstrating the British actions on Long Island were greatly influenced by the "Battle of Bunker Hill"

I placed that battle's name in quotation marks as the author writes "It is a well-known bit of American trivia that the Battle of Bunker Hill took place on Breed's Hill, but that is a fact that would have surprised the Americans who fought there on June 17. There was actually no place called Breed's Hill at that time."

Read the book to find out why.

The author also does of very good job of introducing the principle characters and their personalities. The book is an easy and enjoyable read for those interested in history. He also begins the book with a good discussion of the British march to and retreat from Lexington and Concord. This fits in with his concept that all these battles affected each other and the actions of the British commanders through the rest of the war.

The book also contains two excellent maps of the area. One of a large map showing the details of the Charlestown peninsula with troop locations during the battle. The second map shows a much large view of the greater Boston area at that time. This really helps with understanding troop movements and why they occured.
