This convinces me that the best Flashman books are the earlier ones, and the more of a disaster it is for England, the better the book will be.
In this one, Flashman is pressed into a secret mission in India against his old foe Ignatieff from Flashman at the Charge. Along the way, Flashy is smitten by the Rani of Jasni, disguises himself as a native cavalryman, gets caught in the Great Mutiny and finds himself in another spy mission. Its pretty good. Fraser has a great ear for the period and ability to relate the detail, and above all the mindset of people of the period. Because of this, Flashy is an ideal narrator - because we 20th and 21st century types can relate to and understand him without too many convolutions.
