The story is set in Switzerland in the Middle Ages. The great knight Jon Paul the Terrible, enemy of her people captures Nicole the heroine, in order to prevent her from entering into a marriage that would increase the power of her brother therefore threatening the Swiss Alliance of states, to which Jon Paul belongs. As soon as Jon sees Nicole he falls in love with her and Nicole naively attempts to seduce him in order to escape, as a result Jon exacts his revenge by raping her.

Nicole grew up hearing horrific stories about Jon Paul when in fact it is her brother who is the evil one, Nicole continues to despise Jon unaware that she is being used by her brother as a pawn until he decides to offer Nicole's hand in marriage to Jon, planning to have him murdered afterwards in order to gain, through Nicole, control of Jon's territory.

Throughout most of the book Nicole tries to fight her growing attraction to Jon Paul who makes no secret of his intense desire for her. There is a lot more to the story than that but what I liked most about it was how beautifully written it is. You really do get swept away by it, and I got very attached to all the characters. In my mind this is a proper romance and I definitely recommend it. Well done Jennifer Horsman !!!
