A well written and revealing history of how the black soldiers were treated, protected and often abused by their white officers both during and after the war. It covers the officers who cared for their men and the officers who simply used them.
Their overall treatment after the war is not something we can be proud of, but this was mid-19th century white Anglo-Saxon protestant America and sometimes we treated even white veterans of different origins and beliefs - Irish, Catholics, etc. - just as bad or even worse.
