This historical fiction novel is very atmospheric, immersing readers in the tensions of 1950s Madrid, Spain under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. It's obvious the author conducted a tremendous amount of research to craft this story, but the history is a natural component of the plot.

Since the novel is YA, the primary characters are teens and young adults who face serious issues including poverty, corruption, and abandonment. There are many characters, but I had no issue tracking them. If you're not familiar with the Spanish language, consult the helpful glossary in the book.
