If you're getting tired of every police procedural turning into a serial killer case where the criminal's homicidal motives turn out to be some can-you-top-this psychopathology, dig up the late Janie Bolitho's books. Believable police detectives solving compelling crimes in their villages are getting harder and harder to find so Bolitho's novels are a treasure trove. Both the Inspector Roper series and Bolitho's Cornwall series (featuring a seaside artist whose boyfriend is a police detective) are well-written and well-plotted crime novels.
