Liddinstone - the ideal place for Sir Baldwin and his wife Jeanne to finally have some peace. Afterall isn't that what we all crave when there's chaos all about us? However, it is not to be found for our Keeper of the King's Peace; it is the news of his friend Simon's servant's death, Hugh, that calls Sir Baldwin to the parish of Iddesleigh which is near Fishleigh manor managed by Sir Odo on behalf Sir John vassal of Lord de Courtenay and Monkleigh manor managed by Sir Geoffrey on behalf of the Lords Despensers. Even in this seemingly peaceful parish the avarice of London politics and power disrupts the residents day-to-day lives.

Love thy neighbor? Not in this region, Hugh and his family are attacked as foreigners, the sergeant of Monkleigh is killed, the Lady Lucy of Meeth is missing and danger is the word of the day.

OK, so where's the friar? You'll just have to read to peel back the layers of that part of the story.
