This story is set during at time that is not often seen in novels, Germany during the 1600's. Klaus von Beroburg, a Bavarian war hero has asked for the hand of Lady Frieda. After she refuses, her father insists that she marry Klaus, seeing the opportunity for an alliance between the two powerful families. But after the marriage there are difficulties to work out between the headstrong bride and the serious groom.
