A well-written, easily read contemplation of the life of monks and monasteries. I found this not a history, but rather a view into the facets of monastic life and traditions in all their variety, some of which remain today. The style itself seems thoughtful rather than scholarly, colored by the examples of incidents, characters and locations - many of which still sing the Gloria even in their ruined state.
