Dollycas's Thoughts

We are back on Mackinac Island for the annual yacht race celebration. This brings tourists to the place in droves but one thing that could drive them away is a dead body. That is just what Mal, Allie's pup finds on their early morning walk. When the body is identified Trent's sister becomes the prime suspect and his family completely shuts Allie out. That is no way to keep at relationship going. She wants to be there for him and his sister. So this fudge maker extraordinaire decided to do some investigating of her own. But she also is dipping herself into trouble.

I so enjoy my trips to Mackinac Island with Allie, Jenn, Frances, Mr. Devaney, Trent, Shane, and all the rest of its residents. All the characters are very relateable and there is always something happening at the McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop. The whole gang is so dedicated in growing the business and helping the island to shine.

This time we meet several new characters from the yacht club for all the festivities. Allie also visits the Senior Citizen Center for information for not only her investigation but for another surprise.

The main plot and subplots flow as smooth a newly made fudge onto that cool slab of marble. Just like the nuts and fruit Allie adds to her fudge, Nancy Coco blends twists and surprises into her mystery. She writes in a very descriptive way that bring people, places and situations to life.

Take my word for it, you will want to have some fudge on hand while reading this story. Thankfully there are recipes included throughout the book.

I call this a perfect summer read. Sit back, relax and enjoy a literary escape to Mackinac Island.

All You Need is Fudge is the fourth installment in the Candy Coated mystery series. Alice (Allie) McMurphy has inherited the Historic McMurphy Hotel on Mackinac Island from her grandfather Papa Liam, and has successfully added her Fudge Shop to the hotel's lobby.

It's the week of the annual Yacht Race and the island is buzzing with tourists. Allie is out walking through the marina early one morning when her Bichon puppy Mal (short for Marshmallow) tugs her to the edge of the boat basin to point out a body floating in the water. Allie jumps in and pulls out the body of Carin Moore.

Officer Rex Manning determines that Carin had been bludgeoned before she was pushed into the water, and the prime suspect in her murder is Paige Jessop. Paige is the younger sister of Allie's boyfriend Trent, and Allie is determined to find the real killer and protect her friend.

Along with her best friend Jenn Christensen and Jenn's boyfriend, Officer Shane Carpenter, the group soon discovers that Carin was one of the least liked people in the Mackinac social set. In addition to Paige's volatile history with her, even Carin's best friend Eleanor Wadsworth had issues with the young woman.

In the midst of finding a killer and running the fudge shop, Allie and Jenn are asked by McMurphy handyman Mr. Devaney to help him plan a proposal. Mr. Devaney has decided to ask McMurphy front manager Frances to marry him in a special and romantic setting perfect for the two Seniors who have finally found love again.

Nancy Coco and the Candy Coated series will transport you to Mackinac Island. A warm and friendly cast of characters, mouth watering fudge recipes and loveable pets make this a series you won't want to pass up.

I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley via Kensington Publishing. While not required to write a review I am more than happy of offer my honest opinion.

All You Need is Fudge by Nancy Coco is the fourth book in A Candy-Coated Mystery series. Allie McMurphy is preparing for yacht race week that will take place of the coast of Mackinac Island, Michigan. Mackinac Island is a quaint town where it is like stepping back in time (where the only vehicles allowed is the fire truck and ambulance). Allie owns the Historic McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop which she inherited. Allie is taking a walk with her dog, Mal when the little dog leads her to the water's edge (quite persistent). There Allie sees a body floating in the water and jumps in. The poor girl is dead. The police arrive quickly on the scene and are not surprised to see Allie and Mal (this has happened before). The lady in the lake is Carin Moore. It turns out that Carin had a contentious relationship with Paige Jessop. Since they were children the two competed for everything (grades, boyfriends, etc.). Paige is Trent Jessop's sister and Trent is Allie's boyfriend. When Paige gets arrested, the Jessop family closes ranks. Trent stops returning Allie's calls (which she does not understand and finds upsetting). Allie sets out to find the person responsible to prove her worth to the Jessop family. Will Allie be able to find the killer before they sail off into the sunset? Or before Allie ends up in the drink as the latest victim?

All You Need is Fudge is a charming cozy mystery. It is easy to read and has a good pace. The mystery captured my interest and had some twists. One clue is the trick to solving the crime (but you have to figure out which one). Allie came across as a little desperate in this book. She did not like being shut out by Trent (understandable). But I thought it was a little silly to try and "prove her worth" to the family. I thought in All You Need is Fudge Allie came across more as a "nosy parker" than sleuth (she is a little of both). I give All You Need is Fudge 4 out of 5 stars. I did enjoy the story, the beautiful setting of Mackinac Island, the characters (for the most part), the mystery, and the descriptions of the fudge! There are some fudge recipes included in the book (some of them sound delicious). All You Need is Fudge can be read as a stand-alone novel. The author does a good job of updating the reader of prior events (the characters history). I will definitely be reading the next book in A Candy-Coated Mystery series as well as books by Nancy Coco (aka Nancy J. Parra).

I received a complimentary copy of the novel in exchange for an honest evaluation. The comments and opinions expressed are strictly my own.
