This one I rated 3.5 Stars. Even though I love great westerns, which are rare and few to come by, this one did not do it for me. The skills of the writer are noticeable but perhaps the story line did not grab my attention all that much.
This is perhaps the first time I have read a western written by a black writer, where the principal character is a black protagonist. I thought that was pretty cool and unusual, but the story itself only had its moments and soon enough lost its hold on this reader.
Please note that me mentioning that the author is a black writer is not intended as a rebuke of any kind, for I have read over the years several extra ordinary books written by black authors, be that female or male.
The story is about Gabriel who leaves his home at a relatively early age and gets immersed in a journey of self discovery? Together with his best friend they face adversities and apparent danger. Some of the characters along the way were interesting enough, and one in particular I found quite unique. Nice effort but not the powerhouse I been looking for. 3.5 Stars.
