An excellent story from James Clavell. It is the sixth novel in the Asian series, starting with Shogun. This story takes place in 1862 and involves the heir to the tai-pan of the trading house - Noble House. You will enjoy reading this book.

I read this when it first came out because I had enjoyed his "Shogun" novel. This is more of the same. Good stuff by a very competant story teller.

The heir to the magnificent English trading company, the Noble House ... the direct descendant of the first Toranaga Shogun battling his country into the modern age ... a beautiful young French woman forever torn between ambition and desire .. Their lives intertwine in an exotic land newly opened to foreigners, gai-jin, torn apart by greed, idealism, and terrorism.

This tale is on a equal standing as Shogun. I enjoyed it throughly and was sorry to see it end.

James Clavell. Anyone who loves epic novels of life and struggles it involves in a different time will adore this book. Rich in cultural details and driven by strong, interesting characters. I can't tell you how many times I have re-read his novels over the years and this is one of my favorites. Part of a series starting with Shogun.
