Rick Moody's first novel is a lot like many other writers first stories, focusing on the lives of young striving artists, work, sex and indulgence.
However, instead of getting lost in a cool slacker haze that has become so popular he goes right for the jugular taking a gritty hard look at the flaws and desires of these young New Jersey musicians as they try to sort out their lives. Moody holds up a harsh mirror to human behavior but less to criticize as much as honestly observe.
