The book is written as a series of letters back in 1935. A young girl leaves her country home to move to the city with her uncle. She learns to bake in his bakery and grows a garden on the roof.

Why I recommend it: The pictures that go along with the letters are very well in tune with the story. It's an upbeat story in a time when things weren't good.
