II. rot. 28; wherein the prior says, that some time before the conquest, there was a congregation of hermits at Malvern; that soon after, the abbot of Westminster, with consent of Urso d' Abitot, placed there a prior and monks, and gave them the manors of Newland, Wortesfeld, and Poiwyk: Osbert Fitz- pontz gave them the manor of Longeneye: Guy Fitz Holgod gave them 2 hides of land, and Roger de Chaundos the town of Hatfeld, which donation Henry I, son of William the Conqueror, confirmed, and gave them likewise 101. worth of land, with its appurtenances, in Badenhale, Malverne, Northwod, and Fulford, to hold free from all services. Tanner says—that Great Malvern was a place of great antiquity,for here in the wild forest, was an hermitage, or some kind of religious house, for seculars, before the conquest, endowed by the gift of Edward the Confessor, as it is stated, more than once, in the second charter of King Henry f, recorded in the Monast.
