Darlene Kindalia isn't quite sure what to say when her former lover, Dr. Ryan Plummer, asks her to be a surrogate mother for him and his wife, Jill. But Darlene knows she and her young daughter, Tiffany, need the money, so she agrees. With the help of Earl, a man who has been infatuated with her since high school, Darlene commands a hefty price for carrying the Plummers' child, but she's in the dark as to the real reason Ryan and Jill so desperately want this child. Their son, Taylor, is gravely ill, and the stem cells from the baby's umbilical cord could save his life. Darlene has a faithful group of supporters in the women who run the Ladies Farm, including her mother, Rita, who nonetheless constantly clashes with headstrong Darlene. But when Darlene's pregnancy takes an unexpected turn, she is forced to reevaluate her choices.
