First of all this book is different. Its not at all like the books with Horatio Hornblower or Richard Bolitho or Richard Delancy, books based in the late 1700s and into the 1800s. This book is based in the 1600s which is a very different time. Plus the book is more about the characters than the action. Its far more intellectual than action oriented.
Our hero, Matthew Quinton, gets his ship because he is a royalist and is loyal to the King, not because he has any skill in naval matters. He is a so called gentleman captain. The book is deep in politics (court intrigue). The book is really about how our young captain gets out of trouble.
Its an okay book. Not great, not horrible. I didnt like the Shakespearian language at the beginning, but I did love the descriptions of all the colorful characters.
Its a war book so expect violence.
