This evocative poem makes me think of the lovers in Love In The Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez- a wonderful book.
A Ghost Am I Mortal boundaries melt away As I pass from place to place And from time to time Unseen, unheard, unknown I hide within the shadows Finding refuge there Lost among the clutter Of long forgotten dreams Upon a lonely shelf A dried rose, lifeless and old A ticket stub, faded and worn A promise of love, life, and forever Tears and time lost in dusty memories I walk in dreams of youth I linger there while you sleep Watching you in quiet solitude Near enough but years away My heart beats no more Yet I love you with it My lips speak no more Yet I speak to you in silent whispers My hands are cold and lifeless Yet I reach for you, longing for your warmth I look deep into your eyes Smiling with mine hoping to ease your sadness But you see only tears Drifting along with you by day Standing watch near you by night Great is my power to transcend time and space Powerless am I to share it with you Lost between the past and the present Empty and alone, I wait for you. Should it take five hundred years Or a thousand years, I will wait for you And all the while, you do not know What brings a bitter sweet thought to mind What brings a single tear to spring upon your cheek What brings a small chill on a summer day What brings a candle’s flame to dance for you Look and I will not be there Listen and you will not hear me Call and I will not answer But simply remember and I am alive again A ghost am I Sergio M.
