Within the matrix of ancient religions and philosophies, life was seen as part of an endless cycle of birth and death; time was like a wheel, spinning ceaselessly. Yet somehow, the ancient Jews began to see time differently. For them, time had a beginning and an end; it was a narrative, whose triumphant conclusion would come in the future. This was an interesting book and a quick read. However, it felt like a synopsis of the Hebrew Scriptures. I wish the author would have spent more time discussing how the Jews "changed the way everyone thinks and feels." It seemed like he was making a great background case and then the book ended rather abruptly. Still a great primer to the history of the ancient world and the Hebrew people.
