I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It's a period mystery set in 1870s New York City. As a former New Yorker, I liked reading about people and places that were around at the time - some of which still stand, others which are just a footnote in history. The mystery itself is average, but I liked the two main characters. Unfortunately, it appears Soos has stopped writing in this series. A pity, as I would have liked to have read more with Marshall and Rebecca.

This is an excellent series. Only 2 books so far. Very similar to Rhys Bowen's Molly Murphy or Victoria Thompson's GasLight series. Very good look at turn of the centry New York. Quick reads good story.

lots of interesting details about Tammany Hall, corruption in New York -- Webb is good character, writing an expose of sorts for "Harpers" and Rebecca Davies is a once-wealthy woman running a home for women.

Troy Soos has a wonderful series of early 1900's baseball history "Murder at" various ball parks, also well worth reading.
