Jess Brightwell's family runs a black market for books. He grew up learning the family business and developed the talents he needed to be a successful member of the business. Now in the Great Library he is directed to serve the family business as he trains and learns library secrets. Many books are forbidden and removed, supposedly destroyed.

Packed with action and interesting characters, Jess is part of the library army, the High Garda, devoted to protecting the library and enforcing its rules about what is acceptable to read. What is not acceptable are the books that discuss science, innovation, inventiveness and more. Such books are supposedly destroyed but instead go into the Black Archives, an entity hidden away from the public. Jess and his friends seek the library and attempt to free their friend, Thomas, who has been imprisoned for his creative visions of what can help the populace.

Seceond of a trilogy, it's a fast paced read that packs much into its pages. Entertaining, too. I liked it.
