She holds the MA in History and the PhD in Business History from Bombay University in 1989.

Gita spent most of her childhood in London. She had married to Dilip Piramal of VIP Industries Limited around 1979. They divorced in 2005. Dilip and Gita had two daughters, Radhika and Aparna. Radhika did study from England and MBA from Harvard Business School. Aparna married to Amit Raje in June-2005. After the divorce, Dilip married to Shalini Agarwal in June-2005.
