Sage Taylor is having an identity crisis and has barricaded herself in her room. It's the first month of college for Sage, the youngest of five children born to a white woman and black man fighting for civil rights in Mississippi. By the time of Sage's birth, her father has left the family, and mother and light-skinned children are safely living in the Midwest's suburbs. Now on her own for the first time, Sage must decide who she is. The Black Student Union and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance have both recruited her. The first young man to take an interest in her seems to be stalking her. And Sage is slowly falling apart, reading and rereading recently discovered letters from her father, trying to figure out who he is and who she herself might be. Waters writes with a stark intensity that is at the same time full of compassion and humor.
