I found this more than just a trip guide. It is full of personal details about the peoples of the regions, not just what's there. Good reading even if you never get to visit these exotic places. Makes you wish you could. Frobson

Buruma spends as much time discussing the historical background of each country, as he does recording his (now somewhat dated) impressions. A bit dry in places, but still good for getting an idea of the respective cultures.
