A fun Fantasy read. Some parts were formulaic and predictable and yet the yarn was spun in a manner and language that still made the characters and story fun and interesting. Additionally there were enough parts of the story that were original that the reader is kept interested throughout the story.

Transparent writing and an interesting premise: a soldier in the Vietnam war as a fantasy world hero. The second book in this volume is pure fantasy with a different set of characters, but they converge in the third. I didn't like the second volume (next three books) as much, but I've reread this first several times, and it can stand without the second.
