The Good Men is a dark, emotional narrative about part of the Inquisition against the Cathars in medieval Southern France. It takes place in the small, remote mountain village of Montaillou, and is a novelization of Montaillou, and detailed historical study by Ladurie based on Vatican records of this incident, which played itself out over nearly 20 years. Brooding, threatening atmosphere, and exquisite detail about the daily life of the ordinary peasant. Highly recommended.
