Manchester's first combat as a Marine was on Okinawa, a battle which occurred toward the end of the war. Serving as a machine gunner, he was wounded. There is no denying his courage.

However, in the preface to this book, he states a lot of what is in the book was based on the experiences of others. Therefore, you can't believe everything he writes is true. As such, this is a fictionalized "memoir."
