A historical fiction about Kenya in the midst of colonialism, civil war and finally independence. The structure of the novel is unique, it goes in and out of characters and time periods in a very fluid way so that the reader discovers everyone's secrets. The work clearly presents how war and perverted power relations (colonialism) mutilate the social connections and characters of individuals. The work uniquely privileges human yearnings and the domestic in a genre usually more enamored with politics and war. The story's message about justice is unusual.
