I just got test scores back for a child who recently turned 9 (3rd grade). Weakest area is grammar, especially punctuation and capitalization. Child also had lower scores in spelling. Any suggestions for books/curriculum to help in these areas? FYI: I didn't teach grammar in 1st grade. For 2nd grade we used BJU press. We are currently using First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind. Child will also start Writng Strands this fall. |

Easy Grammar goes well with First Language Lessons and it isn't that expensive. I believe it's the repetition that helps them get it. My kidlets don't mind the repetition b/c we only do a page or two a day.

Thanks Char, Looks like Easy Grammar and/or Daily Grams by the same author will be exactly what I need for her. I've put them on my wish list. |

I love english but we didn't use a curriculum , both my kids are now college graduates with out of sight ACT and SAT scores I took their favorite books scanned a page into the computer and marked in some errors , ie leave out a period , take out or insert capitals, mispell words. Then print out the page and let them read and correct on the page .when they are done give them the book and let them compare. If you choose books that they like boys and girls both will enjoy the lesson and so will you. In addition the child can do their own correcting Let the book be a little below or equal to their reading level to start with. when the child is a little older Jensens journey through Grammar land is the best I have ever seen ,the book sources call it remedial but if you slow it down section by section and help with the reading just a little it can be used with a 3-4 grader .I have had good results when tutoring from it |
