This short story is part of THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV. This short story is difficult to understand because we have little context. Little information is offered about each brother and his point of view. Essentially, Dostoyevsky gives a damning description of how the Catholic Church is operating during the Inquisition (and probably during Dostoyevsky's time). In searing satire, he shows how different the Church is from what the Bible says God is. This must have been shocking stuff during Dostoyevsky's life.
