Really a dreadful book, and not up to the standard of Georgette Heyer's other books. Of the three people I know who tried to read it, none succeeded in finishing it. The characters are like historical puppets and you have no feeling of sympathy for them. According to Jane Aiken Hodge's biography of Heyer, she had already published one modern novel and two Regencies (The Black Moth, Powder and Patch) when this thing appeared. Hodge says, "It is probably the worst book Georgette Heyer ever wrote." I agree entirely.
