Basically a travelogue, although if you travel in north China west to east in search of the wall you can tell a chronological story of wall-building. He tells many old stories and legends which are part of the fabric of Chinese life, apparantly. He has maps in the book, however, all of the places he mentions are not necessarily on the maps.
