This is an anthology of the 6 winning plays from the 1985-86 Young Playwrights Festivals. Far from being a bunch of vacuous plays about high school crap, though, these plays are well-thought out and touching.
I really liked the play "Field Day," which reminds me a lot of "Waiting for Godot" and is a great slamming of war. It shows its futility and violence without actually showing any combat or bloodshed.
"The Ground Zero Club" is another anti-war play about nuclear holocaust that doesn't actually happen. It's quite humorous...as the bomb drops, a girl says to her boyfriend, "Sal, I think we should break up." Too funny!
It's hard to believe that these 6 really well-written plays were done by 15- to 18-year-old writers. I wish my Creative Writing students could do as well!
