The essential elements that changed in the management of GUD syndrome are the inclusion of specific treatment for the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), in the light of recent data pointing to a world-wide increase in its prevalence and the need to collect data to guide the decision-making process. The new guidelines put more emphasis on the management of vaginal infection and set out criteria for the diagnosis and management of cervical infections. The guidelines continue to encourage syndromic management as the approach of choice, especially in resource-poor settings. However, the guidelines also provide information on the treatment of specific infections. The publication also addresses the criteria for drug selection, special consideration of STIs in children and adolescents and notification and management of sexual partners.« less
