Novel about the Roman Army maintaining a border wall between Britannia and Scotland. Includes an arranged marriage, political intrigues, a murder, several battles, Druid and Christian followers, and an interesting contrast between Roman customs, manners, and way of life and that of the so-called barbarians in northern Britain.

I enjoyed this book very much. I am a history freak and loved reading about my English, Scottish and Irish barbarian ancestors who painted themselves blue and worshipped the rocks and trees. Very interesting descriptions of the Romans and the 80 mile wall they built to contain the barbarian hoards of northern Brittania. William Dietrich writes a good story and is easy and interesting to read. I have ordered three more of his books! Geny

It has stood for three centuries at the edge of an empire-a massive structure built to keep the Roman conquerors separate and safe from the barbarians. Now in the year A.D. 368, a senator's daughter has come to Britannia's shores, a beautiful, enigmatic noblewoman who's destined to be the bride of an ambitious tribune.

But Valeria's arrival and mysterious disappearance threaten to unleah jealousy and passion, conspiracies and power plays, and an epic battle between Rome's brutal overlords and the proud celtic warriors that could topple Hadrian's Wall...and shake a tired and tottering Empire to its core.

The book is a decent historical fiction novel. The author has a similar style to Bernard Cornwell, with break ups in chapters, decent character development, and a bloody battle as the climax. The only problem I had was the speed of the book, it starts out kinda slow and then starts to build up about 125 pages in. On the cover it says its "Action packed... a rousing historical novel brimming with adventure, mystery, and romance.".....uhm...no. Its a book with some action in the beginning to keep you interested, convenient romance in the middle, and alot of action in the end. Not a bad book to read though. So 4 out of 5.
