In this world there are monstrous creatures inhabiting human bodies. When one of those creatures is your abusive stepdad, what's a kid to do? Well, you go and hire another monster to get rid of him. Enter P.I. John Persons. When the young boy shows up at his door, offering what money he has, Persons reluctantly accepts the job. When he starts to investigate, he learns that not only is the stepdad abusive to the kids but he is infecting other people with the same evil that he is consumed with.
This was a deliciously twisted tale that blends in Lovecraftian creatures, a investigator that sticks to his word, and a older brother who will do anything to protect his younger sibling. Then has a crazy ending that I never saw coming. It was a wonderful creepy tale that was almost perfect. Khaw writes in what I saw other reviewers refer to as purple prose. When I read The Salt Grows Heavy, this kind of prose was perfect. It really made the story. In this book, it made me struggle a bit. There were quite a few times when I wasn't sure what I was reading or the meaning. I had to reread and still at times, I never quite knew what was meant by a few particular words. Even so, this only took away a miniscule part of the story. I still got the gist and enjoyed it nonetheless.
