This book picks up several months after the end of Alanna (the first book in the Lionness Quartet) and tells the tale of the final years of Alanna's training. As the Goddess's hand lays ever more strongly over her Alanna begins to explore her more feminine side in addition to fighting in her first battle and trying to make sure Jonathan lives long enough to become king. This book introduces new characters and challenges while tying together threads from Book 1 all leading up to a final confrontation.

This book is well written and a quick entertaining read for both YA and adults. The conclusion comes rather abruptly after the climax, but Book 3 picks up shortly after.

The second book in the story of Alanna is better than the first, with a more developed plot and more from the characters we love from the first book. A pleasant read.

A fabulous series. It's published for teens, but it's great for adults, too. A girl who wants to be a knight switches places with her brother, and disguises herself as a boy to go through knight's training in a world with magic and mystery. This is book two, which is more adventures of Alanna. The back says, "Disguised as a boy, Alanna of Trebond becomes a squire - to note other than the prince of the realm. But Prince Jonathan is much more to Alanna; he is her ally, her best friend, and one of the few who knows that she's really a girl. Now it will take all of Alanna's awesome skill, strength, and growing magical powers to protect him from the mysterious evil sorcerer who is bent on his destruction - and hers!

"Here continues the story of Alanna, a young woman bound for glory who is willing to fight against enormous odds for what she believes in."

This story was just as good as the first in the series and is an equally quick read. I've come to enjoy how the author doesn't waste a lot of time between events, like some do, and as a result you don't end up bored because you're reading how detailed starting a fire is or something else as uninteresting. I didn't want to put the book down because I couldn't wait to see what would happen next.

Alanna is an amazing warrior and a squire for Prince Jonathan. She has to complete the Ordeal and officially become a knight of the realm. She also has to conquer Duke Roger and his evil plans to become King. Tamora Pierce really has a way with words which put you into the scene as if you are actually participating. This was just terrific!
