In a review of THE HARD BOUNCE [...] blogger jvdsteen describes Boo as "...a bit of a mix between Spenser, Burke and the bouncer at your favorite bar." This is an incredibly apt description, because as I read the book I was thinking of Robert B. Parker's Spenser. Maybe it was the Boston setting, but I think it was largely because Todd is writing hard-boiled with a surprising sensitivity, something that has always been essential to Spenser's appeal.

Plus, there's Boston.

The Boo and Junior team of bouncers playing at private eye is entertaining, even if at times the verbal interplay becomes just a little... precious. This most minor of sins can be easily overlooked, because it still feels genuine and unforced. And at the end of the day, the theme of the book is family and it is through this interplay more than the exposition that we see that the two are family.

I recommend the book whole-heartedly.
