I got about one third of the way through and put it down--which is not something I do very often. I love Lamott's non-fiction, but her novels lack substance and just don't hold my interest.

I like her non-fiction much better. This is based on real events in her life, but some of it is fictionalized.

Lamott is well known for her non-fiction and it is her non-fiction that I love. Hard Laughter (like much of her fiction) seems to be different views and projections of her own life masked but character development. Her genuineness that is so apparent in her non-fiction is simply not present here.
