Possibly the best of Paretsky's V.I. Warshawski novels. The veteran Chicago P.I. finds herself in prison, and turns down her attorney's offer to make bail, so that she can find out what truly happened to a former inmate who died from a beating after "escaping." This book will keep you on the edge of your seat.

V. I. Warshawsky moves through the lowest and highest layers of Chicago society in this great addition to the series. The Chicago Tribune says "When it comes to creating character, evoking place, and writing crackling and convincing dialogue, Sara Paretsky has no peer -- and Hard Time proves it once again."

A good female private-eye book

I found this mystery quite harrowing to read. V I, a tough private detective from Chicago, finds herself quite by accident involved in an apparent hit-and-run death. From the very beginning, threats emerge from the very sources that should be the safest, especially the law enforcement agencies.

The plot stretches credulity but keeps the tension going. I personally find it a bit too much for a cozy-mystery type like myself, butI'm saying "love it" because it is so well done.

This is the ninth edition to the VI Warshawski books. Her old friend is involved in the life of a new tennis star, Lacey Dowell. Vic is returning from a visit with them when she almost hits a woman lying in the road. After a slimy cop tries to pin a hit and run on her, Vic tries to get to the bottom of it. A windy path leads from the ER to the state prison when the victim once stayed. Throw in the mix her old friend Murray Ryerson, who has a new TV news show and things are bound to get messy. When Vic goes undercover, no one is quite sure if she will escape alive.
