OK, so I read this book because I thought I should understand the background of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (which I haven't even read). I did not expect a biography to be so engrossing. So well written, the author recreates the time in which Stowe lived and how it lead to the writing of "Uncle Tom". Although lengthy and extremely well documented, the book is easy to read and not at all dry. It's too bad that people today forget how different things were then and that the book needs to be looked at from the perspective of that time. I truly enjoyed this book and learned soooo much. Don't be intimidated by the 507 pages, 108 of that is notes, bibliography, footnotes and index. I recommend this book highly.
