The authors is a strong advocate of careful use of x-rays, despite the realization of the damage suffered by users in the 20thC. There are excellent illustrations. I found that of the dentist holding the film in his unprotected hand against the mouth of the patient and the one of the fluoroscope in shoe stores especially poignant.
TVs had cathode ray tubes.
Much of the book deals with early use and misuse of x-rays. Egyptian mummies aid in long-term study of radiation.
