The second book of Master's trilogy set against the background of World War One covers the period 1916 thru the end of 1917. Follows the lives of the Rowland families and their neighbors, employees and everyone else that Masters weaves into his story. Masters writes in a sweeping style that compares favorably with fellow Englishman R.F. Delderfield and American author James Michener.
